Welcome to Mrs. Ahern's Class Web Page

You probably have lots of questions about what to expect this year as your child navigates the exciting world of first grade.  This web page includes answers to many of the questions parents ask me every year.  Please explore a bit, and please revisit the page from time to time.  I update it at least once every month.  I hope you find the information helpful.

To learn more about what's happening this month, be sure to read this month's newsletter by clicking the link to the left.  And don't forget to check and empty your child's "Take Home Folder" on a regular basis.  Important notices are sent home throughout the week.  If you have any questions or concerns in the coming weeks or at any time during the year, please do not hesitate to contact me.  You can send in a note with your child, call the school and leave a message for me (508-336-5230), or email me using the following address:  aherns@seekonkschools.org

Thanks for visiting my web page!

Sign Up for Class Dojo

I use Class Dojoa classroom management and messaging service for teachers.  I hope you will consider joining.  Information on how sign up and use Class Dojo will be provided at Open House and send home with students during the first week of school.

Sign Up for GoNoodle at Home

GoNoodle is a fun, free website we use to take brain breaks in school.  It includes both high energy dance sessions and guided relaxation activities.  GoNoodle is also great for families to use at home.  They have recently added a feature which allows children to pick a "champ" at home with their parents.  The champ will then pop up randomly during the dance videos we show in school.  Please let me know if you have any questions about GoNoodle.

Book Club Orders

I will be ordering books from the Scholastic Book Clubs this year.  A copy of the monthly flyer(s) will usually be sent home each month during the first week of the month.  Orders may be sent into school with a check, or they may be placed directly on our class page on Scholastic's secure web site.  Click on the "Scholastic Book Clubs" link on the left side of this page for more information and to learn when the next order is due.

Special Classes

Our class has special classes every week.  The schedule will vary during the year.  Please click the "Special Classes" link on the left side of this page to learn more about our special classes and to access the schedule

Computers & Technology

Your child will learn about computers and technology throughout the year. Our school librarian/technology teacher, Mrs. Lamar, will take the class into the computer lab during many of our weekly library classes.  In addition, I integrate technology into lessons on a daily basis.  During first grade your child will develop his/her skills with laptops, iPads, and Kindles across all content areas.

Homework

In first grade homework focuses on reading and learning "math facts".  In the past students have been asked to complete reading logs and math worksheets, but research has shown that time spent reading and playing math games are much more effective and valuable for children than other homework activities.  With that in mind students are expected to read 10-15 minutes each night.  Early in the year most of that time might be spent on reading and rereading 2-3 short, easy, familiar books.  As the year progresses and students become more independent, the range of reading materials should vary with some easy, some "just right", and some "challenge" books read each week.

Part of learning to read is having a bank of known words commonly referred to as sight words.  All first graders will be assessed on their knowledge of basic sight words.  If your child needs additional practice with sight words, he/she will bring home a package of words along with a suggested practice schedule.  If your child does not need sight word practice at this time, he/she will not bring home any word cards.

For math homework each student will be provided with a deck of number cards and the instructions for several math games.  These games should be played 2-3 times each week for 10-15 minutes.  Later in the fall your child will bring home information on Reflex Math, an optional, online math program which teaches math facts through fun and engaging games.

From time to time a special "project" may be sent home.  Your help with these small assignments is greatly appreciated.

Homework should take no more than twenty minutes per night. Please help your child to set aside a time and place for homework each night.

Weather Alert

It's hard to believe, but winter has arrived.  Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for outdoor recess.  The children will go out everyday that skies are clear-- unless the temperature or wind chill is below twenty degrees.  They need the fresh air and the exercise, but they won't enjoy themselves if they are cold.  Please reach out to me or the school nurse, Mrs. Soares, if your family needs assistance acquiring winter outerwear for your child.  Lastly, don't forget to label your child's coats, jackets, etc. with his/her name.  Many of them look alike!
