All About Writers' Workshop

We use the Lucy Calkins writing program to guide the teaching of Writers' Workshop in our school district. During Writers' Workshop the children will learn to write fictional narratives, how-to books, poems, nonfiction chapter books, and persuasive reviews.  Each day I will lead a brief focus lesson which will be followed by the children writing for about 30-40 minutes.  Although the class will all be working on the same genre, each child will be writing about his/her own choice of topics.  While the children are writing, I will conference with and instruct individuals and small groups of students.  Writers’ Workshop ends each day with sharing time when the children share their writing in a variety of formats.  At the end of the year, families will be invited to our annual “Meet the Authors Celebration” when the children will share their published books.
