What is Readers' Workshop?

Readers' Workshop was implemented in Seekonk a few years ago.  This type of reading instruction is not based upon a particular program.  Rather, all teachers have been trained in new instructional models and strategies, and they are implementing a curriculum that meets the Massachusetts Frameworks and the Common Core State Standards.  In the Readers’ Workshop model students spend most of their time reading, discussing, and responding to trade books at their own instructional levels.  This research-based method of reading instruction allows all children to progress and grow as readers.

Parents often wonder what a Readers' Workshop lesson looks like.  Each day I read aloud and instruct the children in a range of reading strategies and comprehension skills.  We begin with the daily focus lesson, after which the children independently read books they have self-selected while I meet with individuals and small groups.  Readers’ Workshop ends with sharing time when the children have the opportunity to talk about the books they are reading.
